Workplace relations for the Frontline Manager

Understanding employment law, human resources and the industrial relations framework in the context of the Australian maritime industry.

Who should attend?       

This course is designed for people managers (HR practitioners, supervisors, senior crew) and those who have regular dealings with employees’ workplace conditions (operations managers, HSEQ, payroll).

Participants will learn about implementing effective and compliant policies and procedures, gain confidence in managing performance and behavioural issues in the workplace to achieve better outcomes and understand the mechanics and strategic elements of enterprise bargaining.

Safety net of minimum terms and conditions (modern awards and NES); enhancements on the safety net (enterprise bargaining and employment contracts); Fair Work Commission; Fair Work Ombudsman; role of unions and other employee representatives; work health and safety; distinct features of the maritime industry.

Drafting effective policies; implementation of policies and procedures; misconduct; discrimination; bullying; work health and safety; diversity; consultation.

Managing behaviour and performance

Dealing with complaints and grievances; conducting investigations; disciplinary processes and outcomes; performance improvement; skills and techniques for dealing with interpersonal issues and having difficult conversations; role of unions/employee representatives in disciplinary processes; individual vs collective issues.

Termination of employment

Unfair dismissal, adverse action and general protections; redundancy and redeployment; proceedings in industrial relations tribunals and courts.
